Why Is Cash App Asking For SSN?
Cash App asks for a Social Security number when it needs to verify who you are. That usually happens when you raise limits, enable investing or bitcoin, order a Cash Card, or the app’s risk systems want a stronger ID check.
Why they are allowed to ask
U.S. money transmitters and broker-dealers have Know Your Customer rules. An SSN (or ITIN in some cases) is how they match you to a real person, report certain activity, and keep the product from being used as an anonymous cash pipe.
Is it a scam?
Inside the official Cash App, the prompt is expected. A text, email, or DM that says “verify your SSN here” with a link is not. Close it. Open Cash App yourself from your phone’s home screen.
You can decline and keep a very limited Cash App, but features will stay capped. There is no reputable workaround that skips identity and still unlocks full send/receive limits.
